The French film, Michel Vaillant (2003), stars Sagamore Stévenin and Diane Kruger. It tells the story of events surrounding the 24 hours of Le Mans race, which is based on a popular comic featuring the character, Michel Vaillant. The racing team, Vaillante, owned and operated by the Vaillant family has a rich history of success in various motor sports for many years. Michel Vaillant, the son of founder and owner Henri and younger brother of manager Jean-Pierre, is their most renowned driver. One night, Michel’s mother Élisabeth has a nightmare about her son’s death at Le Mans involving a rival team called Leader who have held a fierce rivalry with Vaillante for over twenty-five years. To comfort her fears, Henri assures her that Vaillante will not be competing at Le Mans this year and that Leader has stopped racing for five years already. He also reminds her that no one plans to use the number 13 car at the race.

In Canada, Michel and his trusted teammate, Steve Warson, are competing in a WRC race. Despite facing intense competition from ruthless rival driver Bob Cramer, Michel emerges victorious. However, this victory only fuels Cramer’s anger towards him for blocking him during the race. Seeking revenge, Cramer confronts Michel’s co-pilot David Wood about the incident. Shortly after, Henri reveals that the Vaillante team has acquired new engines for the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans race and announces that Wood has been promoted to a driver position. The chance to drive alongside Michel at Le Mans is promised to Wood if he performs well in the Rally of Italy. Tragically, during the race in Italy, Cramer deliberately forces Wood off the road causing a fatal crash and explosion.
