Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997), an American mystery thriller directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, stars John Cusack and Kevin Spacey. The screenplay was adapted from John Berendt’s 1994 book of the same name. Set in Savannah, the story centers around a fatal shooting and the ensuing trial of Jim Williams—self-made man, art collector, antiques dealer, bon vivant, and semi-closeted homosexual. New York magazine reporter, John Kelso—author of Before the Fall—is sent to cover one of Williams’ famed Christmas parties in the midst of charming architecture and peculiar happenings. These parties at Williams’ Mercer House were highly sought after events. Invitations were divided into an ‘in’ box or an ‘out’ box, depending on Williams’ favor towards the recipient at that time.
After being unable to find a taxi at the airport, Kelso is given a ride to Jones Street by a tour-bus driver. He takes a tour of Savannah’s popular attractions and gets off at Forsyth Park. From there, he makes his way to his lodging in Monterey Square and briefly meets Billy Hanson in front of Mercer House. Then, Kelso visits Sonny Seiler’s offices at the Armstrong Mansion where he is introduced to Williams, Seiler’s attorney. They take a stroll through Forsyth Park with Seiler’s dog, Uga IV. Williams also shows Kelso the carriage house behind Mercer House where he works on restorations. While there, Kelso recognizes the painting Newmarket Heath by George Stubbs from 1765. Williams mentions that it will be auctioned at the upcoming party the next night.
