The film Midnight Son (2011), written and directed by Scott Leberecht and produced by Matt Compton, stars Zak Kilberg. Set in Los Angeles, it follows the story of Jacob, a young man with a rare skin disorder that forces him to live a solitary life during the day and work as a night security guard. His routine is disrupted when he meets Mary, a local bartender and former drug addict who has just ended a relationship with a drug dealer. As his hunger for blood grows stronger and regular food no longer satisfies him, Jacob begins to suspect that he may be turning into a vampire. However, his doctor diagnoses him as anemic.
As his illness progresses, he shifts from drinking animal blood to relying on human blood for necessary sustenance. This desperation also triggers violent outbursts towards those in the city. Feeling a longing for normalcy, Jacob keeps his deteriorating state a secret from Mary, causing tension in their relationship. While seeking blood at a hospital, he meets a corrupt physician named Marcus who, along with his misguided brother Russell, offers to extract blood from a patient in exchange for payment – an approach that goes against Jacob’s moral code. Soon enough, Detective Ginslegh begins to hone in on Jacob as part of a homicide case.
