Midway (2019)
Midway (2019) is a war film that depicts the crucial Battle of Midway, which marked a turning point in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In December 1937, American naval attaché intelligence officer Lieutenant Commander Edwin T. Layton receives a warning from Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during a state function. The Japanese leader emphasizes that their country’s dependence on imported oil means they would be forced to declare war if the US were to threaten their supply. And so it happens on December 7, 1941, when Japan launches a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor after the US cuts off their oil supply. In response to this act of aggression, Lieutenant Richard “Dick” Best and the Air Group of USS Enterprise are unable to locate the Japanese carrier fleet.
Admiral Yamamoto, with the backing of Rear Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi, proposes a bold strategy to capture Midway Island by utilizing the four Japanese carriers referred to as the ‘Kido Butai’. However, their plan is overruled by the Japanese Army. In February, the Marshall Islands are targeted by the USS Enterprise in a series of raids. Then in April, Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle’s attack on Tokyo takes place and eventually leads to Yamamoto, Yamaguchi, and Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo being given permission to proceed with their Midway invasion plan. Utilizing signals intelligence, Layton works alongside Joseph Rochefort and his cryptography team in May to intercept Japanese messages referencing an operation known only as ‘AF’, following the Battle of the Coral Sea.
