Mighty Aphrodite (1995)
The American comedy film, Mighty Aphrodite (1995), written and directed by Woody Allen, also features him in a leading role. The opening scene takes us to ancient Greek ruins which serve as the backdrop for the introduction and narration of Lenny Weinrib’s story. Lenny lives in Manhattan and works as a sportswriter, while his wife Amanda is an ambitious art curator. They decide to adopt a baby boy who they name Max. As Lenny spends more time with Max, he realizes that the child is highly gifted. This piques Lenny’s interest and he becomes determined to uncover Max’s biological mother’s identity. After an exhaustive search, Lenny finds her and discovers she goes by various names including Leslie Ash. She prefers to be called Linda because it translates to ‘pretty’ in Spanish.
Lenny agrees to meet Linda at her apartment, but opts to avoid any intimate activities. Instead, he encourages her to break away from her current lifestyle and embrace a more wholesome one. This suggestion provokes an angry reaction from Linda, who returns Lenny’s money and orders him to leave. However, undeterred by her reaction, Lenny remains committed to befriending Linda and bettering her situation. He eventually manages to assist her in escaping her abusive pimp and then attempts to set her up with a boxer named Kevin. Although they initially seem like a suitable match, their relationship turns bitter when Kevin discovers Linda’s past.
