Mighty Joe Young (1998)
Based on the 1949 film of the same name, Mighty Joe Young (1998) is a grandiose movie. The plot revolves around a colossal mountain gorilla, Joe, who is taken to a wildlife reserve in Los Angeles by his young caretaker and a zoologist, for his safety against poachers. The film was expertly directed by Ron Underwood. During her childhood, Jill Young and her mother Ruth, who is a primatologist, conduct research on mountain gorillas in the Pangani Mountains of Central Africa. One day, while observing an infant gorilla and its mother, Jill names him Joe. However, their peaceful life is disturbed when poachers led by Andrei Strasser invade the mountains. Kweli alerts Ruth about their presence as she puts Jill to bed. Without wasting time, Ruth heads into the mountains followed closely by Jill.
After Strasser takes the lives of both Joe and Jill’s mothers, he sets his sights on capturing Joe. In a desperate attempt to defend himself, Joe bites off Strasser’s trigger finger and thumb, leading the villain to vow revenge on the young gorilla. Before passing away, Ruth makes Jill promise to protect Joe. Over a decade later, Joe has grown to an impressive 15 feet tall and weighs a massive 2,000 pounds. Despite his imposing size, other gorillas reject him and he remains at risk of being hunted by poachers. Thankfully, Gregg O’Hara from an animal conservatory in Los Angeles convinces Jill that relocating there would increase their safety. Once at the conservatory, Jill takes on the role of caring for Joe and together they win over the hearts of the staff at the refuge.
