Mighty Joe Young (1949)
Mighty Joe Young (1949) is an American black and white fantasy film distributed by RKO Radio Pictures. Produced by the same creative team behind King Kong (1933), it tells the story of eight-year-old Jill Young living in 1937 Tanganyika territory, Africa with her father on their ranch. One day, two Africans bring an orphaned baby gorilla to their ranch, which Jill happily trades her toys and money for. Twelve years later, Hollywood businessman Max O’Hara and his assistant Gregg are on a safari trip in search of animals for their nightclub back in LA. While they have captured several lions, things take an unexpected turn when Joe Young appears – now standing at 12 feet tall and weighing 4,500 pounds. When Joe’s fingers get bitten by a caged lion, he goes into a destructive rage.
Seeing potential in Joe as their new star attraction, Max and Gregg attempt to tame him but end up being thrown off their horses. Just as things seem to be getting out of control, adult Jill arrives on the scene and manages to calm Joe down. After meeting with Jill, Gregg becomes enamored with her. Max predicts that Jill and Joe will achieve great success in Hollywood and quickly become wealthy. In need of a reliable source of income, Jill agrees to bring Joe along for the ride. On opening night, Joe impresses the audience by lifting a large platform while Jill serenades them on a grand piano. He then easily defeats 10 of the world’s strongest men in a tug of war. Even Italian boxer Primo Carnera is no match for Joe, who effortlessly tosses him into the crowd.
