Mildred Pierce (2011), a period drama miniseries on HBO created by Todd Haynes, is based on James M. Cain’s 1941 novel of the same name. The show centers around Mildred, a divorced woman struggling to open a restaurant during the Great Depression while also dealing with her self-absorbed daughter. This adaptation follows the original 1945 film noir featuring Joan Crawford and is accompanied by an original score from Carter Burwell. Airing from March 27 to April 10, 2011, Mildred Pierce received positive reviews for its performances, despite a limited audience. The series earned nine Emmy nominations at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards and took home two wins: Outstanding Lead Actress for Winslet and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Pearce.

In Glendale, California, 1931, Mildred Pierce is a talented baker and young mother who finds herself on her own after kicking out her husband, Bert. With two daughters, Veda and Ray, to support, Mildred must find work. However, the job opportunities at the employment agency don’t meet her standards. Her friend Lucy Gessler offers dating advice as she unexpectedly starts a romantic relationship with Wally Burgan, a former business partner of Bert’s. One day, the agency calls about a housekeeping position for a wealthy socialite and Mildred reluctantly agrees to an interview. But when the meeting turns sour, she seeks refuge at Cristofor’s Café where fate intervenes in the form of Ida, a waitress who will play a role in shaping Mildred’s future.
