Mildred Pierce (1945)
Mildred Pierce (1945), an American melodrama/film noir by Michael Curtiz, follows the story of Mildred’s troubled marriage to Monte Beragon. After we witness Monte’s murder, the police inform Mildred that her first husband, Bert Pierce, is the culprit. They base this accusation on the fact that he owned the murder weapon, had a motive, and does not deny his involvement in the crime. However, Mildred strongly protests these allegations and shares her side of the story with the officer through a flashback. In it, we see that Mildred and Bert were not happily married. As Wally Fay ends their partnership in business, Mildred must turn to selling her baked goods to support their family.
This only worsens their already strained relationship as Bert accuses Mildred of favoring their two daughters over him. Their arguments escalate after a phone call from Bert’s mistress, Maggie Biederhof, leading them to eventually separate. Mildred has custody of two children, 16-year-old Veda and 10-year-old Kay. Her main focus is on providing for Veda’s desire for material possessions and high social status, as she is constantly embarrassed by her mother’s occupation as a baker. Mildred hides her second job as a waitress from Veda, but her daughter eventually discovers the truth and treats her with disrespect. At this time, Mildred crosses paths with Monte Beragon, an affluent man who holds the building she wants to buy for her new restaurant.
