Clint Eastwood directs, co-produces, scores, and stars in the American sports drama Million Dollar Baby (2004). Written by Paul Haggis and based on stories from F.X. Toole’s Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner, this film follows the journey of Margaret ‘Maggie’ Fitzgerald, a waitress from the Ozarks who seeks out the guidance of Frankie Dunn, a cantankerous Irish-American trainer at his rundown boxing gym in Los Angeles. Despite initially refusing to train her due to both her gender and age, Dunn’s friend and employee Eddie ‘Scrap-Iron’ Dupris provides support for Maggie’s dreams. Meanwhile, Dunn’s prized fighter ‘Big Willie’ Little leaves him for a more successful manager after growing impatient with Dunn rejecting championship opportunities. Eventually, Dunn gives in and reluctantly agrees to train Maggie.
Maggie’s successes in the women’s amateur boxing division are largely thanks to Frankie’s coaching. However, her reputation for quick knockouts has made it a challenge for Frankie to secure opponents for her matches. In order to overcome this obstacle, Frankie must resort to bribery in convincing other managers to put their trainee fighters up against her. This concerns Scrap, who arranges a meeting for Maggie with Mickey Mack in hopes of securing bigger fights. Despite this opportunity, Maggie remains loyal to Frankie and declines the offer. As a gesture of admiration, Frankie gives Maggie the Gaelic nickname ‘Mo Chuisle’ which is embroidered on her boxing robe, though he never reveals its meaning. The two continue their journey together, as Maggie continues to achieve victories.
