Millions (2004)
Millions (2004) is a British comedy-drama film directed by Danny Boyle, following the story of Damian, a 9-year-old Catholic boy whose family relocates to Widnes after his mother’s passing. While playing near the train tracks, Damian discovers a bag of money thrown from a passing train. He confides in his brother Anthony, 12, and they discuss their options. While Anthony wants to keep the money for themselves, Damien, known for his kind and religious nature, is inspired by a lecture at school and decides to use his share of the money to help the less fortunate. Throughout the film, Damien carries out various acts of kindness such as freeing birds from pet stores and treating beggars to Pizza Hut.
Meanwhile, Anthony resorts to bribery and looking into investing in real estate with the found money. A mysterious stranger approaches Damian near the train tracks, inquiring about money. Assuming him to be a beggar, Damian responds that he has ‘plenty of funds’. However, Anthony, feeling wary, discreetly gives the man a jar of coins to cover Damian’s actions. This event occurs in the weeks leading up to ‘€ Day’, when The Bank of England and United Kingdom will switch from pounds (£) to euros (€). To prepare for this change, an assembly is organized at Damian’s school to educate students on how they can assist those in need. Knowing that his pounds will soon be obsolete, Damian decides it would be wise to distribute them before the conversion.
