The American science fiction action film, Minority Report (2002), directed by Steven Spielberg, is loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novella The Minority Report. The federal government plans to nationally implement the ‘Precrime’ police program in 2054. This prototype has been operating in Washington, D.C. for six years. In this program, three clairvoyant humans (‘precogs’) receive psychic impressions of future homicides, allowing officers to prevent them before they happen. Perpetrators are put in a panopticon-like prison facility after being placed in an electrically induced coma. Although Precrime has significantly reduced premeditated murders during its existence, there are still cases of spontaneous ‘red ball’ killings that require quick action from the police.
John Anderton, the precrime chief, joined the program after his six-year-old son Sean was abducted and never found. Struggling with depression and addiction to the drug ‘neuroin’, he has also been abandoned by his wife Lara. In the midst of this, Department of Justice agent Danny Witwer conducts an audit on the Precrime operation, with a determined effort to uncover any potential flaws. As Anderton watches Agatha, one of the precogs, she experiences a flashback of a woman drowning. Intrigued by this revelation, Anderton inquires about Anne Lively’s case from the prison warden and discovers that her supposed attempted murder was never recorded. This leads him to question his trust in the system for preventing crimes before they occur.
