The American sports film Miracle (2004), directed by Gavin O’Connor and written by Eric Guggenheim and Mike Rich, follows the story of Herb Brooks, head ice hockey coach at the University of Minnesota. He interviews for the national team coach’s job with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), sharing his strategies on how to defeat the dominant Soviet team who have won the gold medal in the previous four Olympics. Despite initially doubting Brooks, the USOC ultimately hires him and he meets assistant coach Craig Patrick at tryouts in Colorado Springs. Brooks disregards the preferences of senior USOC hockey officials when selecting a preliminary roster of 26 players. While USOC executive director Walter Bush is hesitant, he believes that Brooks has their best interests in mind and agrees to bear any criticism from the committee.

At the start of practice, forward Rob McClanahan and defenseman Jack O’Callahan engage in a heated altercation fueled by their college rivalry. Coach Brooks addresses the team, urging them to put aside any past animosities and come together as a unified unit. He then has each player introduce themselves by name, hometown, and team affiliation. Throughout subsequent practices, Brooks employs unconventional tactics to narrow down the roster to 20 players. The players are constantly on edge, knowing that Brooks himself was once cut from the US squad that went on to win the 1960 Olympic gold medal; they understand his determination to succeed at any cost. During an exhibition game against Norway in Oslo, which ends in a tied score of 3–3, Brooks notices that the players are not performing at their full potential.
