Mirrors (2008)
Directed by Alexandre Aja, Mirrors (2008) is a supernatural horror film. The story follows a security guard who runs through a subway station and finds himself trapped in a room with his reflection begging for his life. In a gruesome turn of events, the reflection uses a shard of glass to fatally wound the real security guard. Meanwhile, Ben Carson, a suspended police detective, starts his first night as a security guard at the Mayflower – a luxury department store that had been gutted by fire and closed five years prior. As he patrols the building, Ben notices numerous mirrors still intact from the store’s previous days. On one of his rounds, he stumbles upon a mirror covered in handprints – but only on its reflective side. He also notices an open door in the reflection that is actually closed in reality. Despite these peculiar occurrences, Ben initially brushes them off as mere hallucinations.
Soon after discovering the wallet of Gary Lewis, the night guard from the beginning of the film who apparently took his own life, Ben uncovers a note bearing the word ‘Esseker’. This, coupled with his observation that there was no blood on the mirror shard featured in Gary’s supposed crime photos, leads Ben to believe that the mirrors are responsible for driving people to harm themselves. Tragically, Ben’s sister Angie falls victim to this phenomenon, as her reflection forces her jaw open and causes her to bleed profusely. Overcome with grief upon finding her body, Ben becomes enraged and sets out to destroy the mirrors at Mayflower. However, much to his frustration, they prove indestructible. In a fit of desperation, he demands answers from the mirrors and witnesses cracks form on one of them spelling out ‘ESSEKER’.
