Misery (1990) is an American psychological thriller film directed by Rob Reiner, based on Stephen King’s 1987 novel of the same name. The story follows famed novelist Paul Sheldon, creator of the popular Victorian romance series starring Misery Chastain. In an effort to change genres, he completes a new manuscript in hopes of launching his post-Misery career. Unfortunately, during his journey home from Silver Creek, Colorado to New York City, Paul is caught in a blizzard and crashes his car. He is rescued by Annie Wilkes, a nurse who brings him to her remote home. Upon waking up, Paul discovers that he has sustained multiple injuries including broken legs and a dislocated shoulder. With no means of communication or transportation due to the blizzard, Annie offers to care for him as his self-proclaimed ‘number one fan’.

Annie’s unsettling actions reach a peak when she finishes reading the latest installment of the Misery series and finds out that Misery meets her end. In a fit of anger, she admits to keeping Paul captive without anyone knowing, and demands he destroy his new manuscript. After providing him with a typewriter, Annie commands him to write a new book where Misery is resurrected. Paul manages to escape from his room using a bobby pin, and starts planning by gathering painkillers and attempting to drug Annie. However, his attempt fails when she catches on. While searching for something in Annie’s room, Paul comes across a scrapbook filled with news articles about her past and discovers that she was accused of causing the deaths of multiple babies at the hospital where she worked.
