Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

In the fantasy film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016), directed by Tim Burton and written by Jane Goldman, Jake has grown up listening to his grandfather Abe’s tales of battling monsters at ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ on the island of Cairnholm. The residents, including the headmistress Miss Peregrine, possess supernatural abilities and are known as ‘Peculiars’. When Abe passes away with no explanation other than a clue to September 3rd, 1943, Jake follows the advice of Dr. Golan and travels to Wales with his father Frank to uncover the truth about this mysterious place. Despite finding it destroyed in a bombing, Jake is guided through a portal by the children from Abe’s stories and transported back in time to when the home was still standing. There, Miss Peregrine reveals her unique ability as a Ymbryne – one who can transform into a bird (specifically a peregrine falcon) and manipulate time.
In order to avoid being persecuted for their peculiar abilities, she and the children have taken refuge in a time loop set to September 3, 1943. This loop is only accessible to those with peculiar traits, allowing them to escape aging by reliving the same day over and over again. Jake meets the other children, including Emma Bloom who has the power of aerokinesis, and he immediately takes a liking to her. It is here that Jake discovers he too is a peculiar like his grandfather, and is able to see the invisible monsters from his grandfather’s stories known as ‘Hollowgasts’ or ‘Hollows’. These disfigured scientists were once Peculiars who attempted to achieve immortality by harvesting the powers of a Ymbryne, resulting in their deformities. Led by Mr. Barron, a shapeshifter, they now hunt Peculiars in order to consume their eyeballs which will restore their human appearance but leave them with milky-white eyes.
