Miss Sloane (2016)
Miss Sloane (2016), a political thriller directed by John Madden and written by Jonathan Perera, follows the story of Elizabeth Sloane. She is a cutthroat lobbyist known for her intense work ethic, who finds herself testifying before Senator Ronald Sperling’s congressional hearing. The hearing focuses on possible violations of Senate ethics rules during Sloane’s time at Washington D.C.’s Cole Kravitz & Waterman lobbying firm. Three months prior to this, Sloane’s firm is approached by Bill Sanford, a representative from the gun manufacturing industry. He wants their help in opposing the Heaton-Harris bill, which aims to expand background checks on gun purchases targeting female voters. However, Sloane dismisses Sanford’s proposal and is later approached by Rodolfo Schmidt from rival lobbying firm Peterson Wyatt. Schmidt offers her the opportunity to lead the campaign in support of the bill instead.
Sloane accepts and convinces most of her team to join her, except for her trusted colleague Jane Molloy. At Peterson Wyatt, Esme Manucharian becomes the go-to spokesperson for media appearances, thanks to Sloane’s selection. Together, they make significant strides in gaining support for the bill. During a heated live television debate, Sloane brings up Esme’s past experience with a school shooting, which she had previously chosen to keep private. Later on, as she leaves her office, Esme is held at gunpoint by an assailant who is then shot and killed by a legally armed civilian. Supporters of gun rights use this incident to their advantage, causing the Heaton-Harris bill to lose traction in the Senate. The situation is further complicated by news of a Senate investigation into Sloane’s lobbying tactics.
