Abrams and Bryan Burk, director Bird works from a screenplay written by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, who also serve as co-producers. The team’s mission takes them to Budapest where they must extract Hunt from prison before infiltrating the Kremlin for information on Cobalt. However, their cover is blown by Cobalt himself causing a destructive explosion. Despite their efforts to escape, Hunt is captured and blamed for the bombing by SVR agent Anatoly Sidorov.
After escaping, Ethan reunites with the IMF Secretary in Moscow, along with analyst William Brandt. Brandt reveals that Cobalt is actually Kurt Hendricks, a mastermind attempting to instigate nuclear warfare between the U.S. and Russia. It is discovered that Hendricks orchestrated the bombing of the Kremlin as a cover for his theft of a Russian launch control device. The Secretary informs them that the President has activated ‘Ghost Protocol’, rejecting any involvement with the IMF. He secretly tasks Ethan to continue pursuing Hendricks, but unfortunately meets his demise when ambushed by Sidorov’s forces. With Brandt by his side, Ethan regroups with Jane and Benji to devise a plan. They aim to infiltrate Hendricks’ meeting at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, where he will be selling the stolen launch codes through his associate Wistrom to Moreau.
