In Mission: Impossible II (2000), a thrilling spy movie directed by John Woo, Tom Cruise takes on the roles of both producer and star. Here, bio-genetics scientist Dr. Vladimir Nekhorvich reaches out to the IMF agency to warn his old friend Dimitri (Ethan Hunt) about his employer’s nefarious plans. Biocyte Pharmaceuticals has coerced him into creating a biological weapon for their own financial gain. Desperate to stop them, Nekhorvich injects himself with the Chimera virus and carries its antidote, Bellerophon, in a bag. However, things take a dangerous turn when IMF agent Sean Ambrose (posing as Dimitri) turns traitor and steals Bellerophon before crashing the plane in the Rocky Mountains. In Seville, IMF director Swanbeck informs Ethan of Ambrose’s betrayal and assigns him with the task of retrieving both Chimera and Bellerophon. To help him on this mission, Ethan enlists Nyah Nordoff-Hall, an expert thief and Ambrose’s former flame. Despite her initial reluctance, Ethan convinces her to trace Ambrose’s whereabouts using an injectable tracking device once they reach Sydney, home of Biocyte laboratories.
Ethan enlists the help of his team, consisting of old friend and computer hacker Luther Stickell, and helicopter pilot Billy Baird, for their mission to Sydney. Meanwhile, Nyah pretends to reconnect with her ex-partner Ambrose in order to gather information. To secure Biocyte’s cooperation, Ambrose presents CEO John McCloy with a video showing the effects of Chimera on one of Nekhorvich’s colleagues. Nyah gives Ethan a memory card containing the footage, which also reveals that Chimera has a 20-hour dormant period and can only be countered by Bellerophon during that time frame. After kidnapping McCloy, Ethan discovers that Ambrose has possession of the only remaining Bellerophon samples taken by Nekhorvich. However, Ambrose himself does not have the virus as he injected it into himself. When Ambrose realizes Nyah’s betrayal, he disguises himself as Ethan and manipulates her into revealing their plan.
