Mission: Impossible III (2006) is an American action spy film directed by J. J. Abrams, produced by and starring Tom Cruise, from a screenplay written by Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci. In the film, Hunt is restrained in a chair while a man holds a woman hostage across from him. The man demands the location of the ‘Rabbit’s Foot’. When it becomes clear that Hunt is not aware of its whereabouts, the man starts counting to ten despite Hunt’s pleas for mercy. As tensions rise, the man questions Hunt’s sincerity and ultimately fires his weapon. Meanwhile, just days earlier, Hunt has retired from fieldwork with the IMF and now leads training sessions while living with his fiancée Julia Meade, who remains unaware of his true profession.
IMF Director of Operations John Musgrave approaches him with a special mission: to rescue his protégé, Lindsey Farris. She had been seized while investigating arms dealer Owen Davian. Musgrave has already assembled a team for Ethan – Declan Gormley, Zhen Lei, and old partner Luther Stickell. Together, they retrieve Lindsey in Berlin and retrieve two damaged laptops. In their escape, Ethan discovers an explosive pellet implanted in Lindsey’s head that detonates before he can disable it with a defibrillator, killing her. IMF Director Theodore Brassel reprimands both Ethan and Musgrave for the explosion. Later on, Ethan finds out about a postcard from Lindsey that was mailed to him prior to her capture and discovers a magnetic microdot hidden beneath the stamp.
