The American sci-fi adventure film, Mission to Mars (2000), directed by Brian De Palma, tells the story of the Mars I mission. In 2020, the mission is launched with Luke Graham as its commander. Upon reaching Mars, the team stumbles upon a bright white formation in the Cydonia region. They believe it could be an extrusion from a subsurface geothermal column of water that could be beneficial for future human colonization efforts. The team alerts the Earth-orbiting World Space Station before going to investigate further. However, while exploring the formation, they hear a strange sound on their communications system. Their radar initially indicates that the formation is made of metal, but when they increase its power, a violent vortex appears and takes out everyone but Luke. Once the vortex dissipates, they discover that the formation is actually part of a large humanoid face.
An electromagnetic pulse is created during the event, which is observed by the space station. Shortly after, a distress message from Luke is received. The realization that Luke could not have left due to potential damage to the Earth Return Vehicle’s computer system prompts the team to repurpose the Mars II mission as a rescue. Months later, Commander Woody Blake, his wife Terri Fisher, Jim McConnell (recently widowed), and technician Phil Ohlmyer make up the crew of Mars Rescue. As they approach Mars orbit, they encounter a problem – all satellite imagery of their intended landing site is obscured by static. Additionally, micrometeoroids cause damage to the ship’s external fuel lines and subsequently result in engine explosions. This leaves them with no choice but to abandon ship and make their way to the Resupply Module in nearby orbit using their spacesuits.
