Mistress America (2015)
Mistress America (2015), an American comedy film directed by Noah Baumbach and written by Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, follows college freshman Tracy Fishko as she struggles to adjust to life at Barnard. Feeling lonely after developing a crush on fellow student Tony, who begins dating someone else, Tracy reaches out to her soon-to-be stepsister Brooke in New York. Captivated by Brooke’s lifestyle, Tracy takes her mother’s advice and gets closer to her. Inspired by their time together, Tracy writes a short story which she submits to her college’s prestigious literary magazine. As they continue spending time together, Brooke shares her plans for a unique restaurant named Mom’s, which she is funding with her partner in honor of her late mother.
When Brooke returns home one night, she finds herself locked out of her apartment and discovers that her boyfriend has withdrawn financial support. With a large amount of bills looming for the restaurant, she decides to visit a psychic with Tracy. Tracy interprets the psychic’s words as a sign that Brooke should reach out to her former friend Mamie-Claire for financial help. Mamie-Claire and Brooke had a falling out after Mamie-Claire stole her business idea and married her ex-fiancé. To get to Mamie-Claire’s home in Connecticut, Tony drives Tracy and Brooke, with Nicolette tagging along to ensure there is no affair between Tony and Tracy. Upon arriving at Mamie-Claire’s house, they crash her book club meeting where Brooke pitches her restaurant idea in hopes of getting an investment from Mamie-Claire.
