Moana (2016)
Released by Walt Disney Pictures, Moana (2016) is an American animated musical fantasy action-adventure film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Set on the Polynesian island of Motunui, the inhabitants worship the goddess Te Fiti, who is believed to have brought life to the ocean using a pounamu stone as her heart and source of power. However, Maui, a shapeshifting demigod known for his trickery and mastery of wayfinding, stole Te Fiti’s heart centuries ago in order to give humanity the power of creation. This caused Te Fiti to disintegrate and Maui was attacked by Te Kā, a volcanic demon. He lost both the heart and his magical fish hook to the depths of the sea. Fast forward a thousand years later, when Moana, daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, is chosen by the ocean itself to return the heart to Te Fiti. Despite her parents’ efforts to keep her away from the sea and prepare her for becoming chief of Motunui someday.
Sixteen years later, the island is struck by blight, killing vegetation and shrinking the fish catch. Moana’s idea to explore beyond the reef with her pet pig Pua is rejected by Tui. Despite this, Moana attempts to conquer the reef but is ultimately shipwrecked. Later that day, Moana’s wise grandmother Tala shows her a hidden cavern filled with ships and reveals that Motunui’s people were once great voyagers until Maui stole Te Fiti’s heart, making the ocean unsafe. Tala explains that Te Kā’s darkness is what is destroying their home, but it can be cured if Moana finds Maui and restores the heart of Te Fiti. The ocean gifts the heart to Moana through Tala before she becomes seriously ill. On her deathbed, Tala urges Moana to seek out Maui. With a camakau from the secret cavern and her oblivious pet rooster Heihei who sneaked aboard, Moana sets sail on her journey. They face a typhoon and end up stranded on an island where she finally meets Maui who takes great pride in his achievements.
