Mob City (2013)
Mob City (2013) is an American neo-noir crime drama television series based on real-life accounts of the L.A.P.D. and gangsters in 1940s Los Angeles, chronicled in John Buntin’s book L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America’s Most Seductive City. It follows the decades-long conflict between the Los Angeles Police Department, led by police chief William Parker, and ruthless criminal elements under the leadership of Bugsy Siegel, who controlled mafia operations in the city. Set in 1947, with glimpses into the 1920s for context, this crime drama captures a time of flashy cars and budding movie stars in Los Angeles, but also a time tainted by lies and corruption. The LAPD was riddled with mafia influence and there were glaring loopholes that the mob took full advantage of.
In 1925, Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, and Sid Rothman commit a crime by killing some men and stealing their truck full of alcohol. In 1947, Joe Teague receives a note in his mailbox. He finds it inside a matchbook instructing him to go to ‘Bunny’s Jungle’ at 8 pm. Stand-up comedian Hecky Nash offers Joe a bodyguard job for $1,000 to help with a blackmail scheme. After thinking it over, Joe shares the details with Detective Hal Morrison and Captain William Parker. Morrison decides to set up an undercover team within the LAPD. Despite his hesitation, Joe agrees to work with Nash and meets him in a secluded area in the oil fields later that night. Sid Rothman joins them and exchanges cash for some photos. Upon recognizing the content of the pictures, Joe becomes conflicted but ultimately decides to take action. He shoots Nash and then hides the money in his car before heading back to ‘Bunny’s Jungle’. When Morrison and the police arrive, Joe lies and frames Rothman as Nash’s shooter. Consumed with guilt for his actions, Joe returns to Bunny’s Jungle feeling remorseful about killing Nash.
