The film Molly’s Game (2017) is both written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, making it his directorial debut. It is based on the memoir of the same name by world-class mogul skier Molly Bloom. Despite her Olympic aspirations, Molly’s career as a skier is cut short due to a severe injury during a qualifying event in 2002. Taking a break from her law school plans, she moves to LA where she becomes a bottle service waitress at a club. There, she meets Dean, an extravagant but unsuccessful real estate developer who hires her as his office manager. Through this job, Molly gets involved in organizing underground poker games at ‘The Cobra Lounge’, which attracts famous and wealthy individuals such as movie stars, investment bankers, and athletes.

With large sums of money earned through tips alone, Molly quickly becomes immersed in this high-stakes world. Molly, initially unfamiliar with poker, quickly picks up on the skill of appealing to players for tips. She hopes to impress Player X, a renowned film star and the most successful player in the game. However, Dean becomes threatened by Molly’s growing independence in managing the games and ultimately lets her go. Undeterred, Molly leverages her connections from years of running the game and organizes her own high-stakes poker events. With a rented hotel penthouse and a hired staff, she also reaches out to club and casino workers to promote her games.
