Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
Mona Lisa Smile (2003), an American drama directed by Mike Newell and written by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, follows the story of Katherine Ann Watson. Upon accepting a teaching position at Wellesley College in 1953, Katherine realizes her students have already mastered the textbook and syllabus. Determined to push boundaries, she introduces modern art and encourages open discussions on the definition of quality artwork. Despite facing opposition from traditionalist student Betty Warren, Katherine remains steadfast in her belief that women should strive for more than just marriage. However, Betty’s conservative views lead her to expose Amanda Armstrong, a lesbian nurse who provided contraception to students, which results in Amanda losing her job.
Additionally, Betty repeatedly targets Katherine for promoting the idea that women can have fulfilling careers alongside marriage. Excited to tie the knot with her partner, Spencer, Betty anticipates receiving the typical benefits for married students. Yet, Katherine declares that she will grade her fairly on performance and expects her to fulfill all course requirements. Meanwhile, Connie Baker enters a relationship with Betty’s cousin, Charlie, but ends things when Betty accuses him of being involved with another girl named Deb. Betty downplays their fling as just a casual encounter. However, some time later, Connie and Charlie reconcile and he clarifies that he had cut ties with Deb months ago.
