Money Monster (2016), an American thriller directed by Jodie Foster and written by Jamie Linden, Alan Di Fiore, and Jim Kouf from a story by Di Fiore and Kouf, features Lee Gates, an ostentatious financial expert who hosts the show Money Monster. The day before the show, IBIS Clear Capital’s stock suddenly plummeted, causing investors to lose $800 million due to a trading algorithm glitch. Lee had planned to have IBIS CEO Walt Camby on as a guest for an interview, but Camby left for Geneva, Switzerland on a business trip without warning. During the show, a deliveryman named Kyle Budwell appears on set with a gun and holds Lee hostage while demanding he put on an explosive vest. Kyle reveals that he had invested his entire life savings of $60,000 in IBIS after seeing Lee endorse the company on air.

After being devastated along with his fellow investors, Kyle is determined to confront Lee and potentially harm himself in the process. The authorities are eventually called in and they discover that the bomb’s receiver is dangerously close to Lee’s kidney. In order to eliminate the threat, Lee must be shot, but there is no guarantee he will survive. Working together with experienced director Patty Fenn, Lee attempts to reason with Kyle and locate Camby. However, Kyle is not satisfied when both Diane Lester, IBIS’s chief communications officer, and Lee offer compensation for his financial losses. He becomes even more incensed by Diane’s insistence that the algorithm is responsible. Diane herself is not content with her explanation and goes against her colleagues by reaching out to Won Joon, the programmer behind the algorithm.
