The film Monster (2003), written and directed by Patty Jenkins in her debut as a feature director, follows the story of Aileen Wuornos, a street prostitute who moves from Michigan to Florida in 1989. On the brink of ending her own life, Aileen meets Selby Wall in a gay bar. Despite Aileen’s initial hostility and declaration that she is not gay, the two women strike up a conversation over beers. Selby quickly takes a liking to Aileen, admiring her protective nature. She invites Aileen to spend the night with her at the house where she is staying temporarily (having been kicked out by her parents after being accused of trying to kiss another girl).

The pair plan to meet again at a roller skating rink and share their first kiss. Aileen and Selby’s love story takes a dark turn when they are left with no place to call home. Selby has to return to her aunt’s house while Aileen, after being violently attacked by her client Vincent Corey, defends herself by taking his life. She later confides in Selby, who is understandably upset about the situation as Aileen was unable to support them both. Despite her efforts to find suitable employment, Aileen faces constant rejection due to her lack of education and work experience. This drives her to resort to robbery and even murder of her clients in order to make ends meet.
