Moonfall (2022), a science fiction disaster film, is the result of collaboration between writer, director, and producer Roland Emmerich. In 2011, astronauts Brian Harper and Jocinda Fowler are repairing a satellite during a Space Shuttle mission when a strange black swarm attacks their orbiter. The swarm kills one of their crewmates and leaves Fowler incapacitated. Despite Harper’s account of the event, which he stands by for eighteen months, his explanation is not believed and he is ultimately fired due to alleged human error. A decade later, K.C. Houseman, who holds the belief that the Moon is an artificial megastructure, misappropriates time on a research telescope and makes a startling discovery – the Moon’s orbit is changing and it’s getting closer to Earth. When Houseman shares this information with Harper, who dismisses him initially, Houseman turns to social media to spread his findings. Eventually NASA becomes aware of the anomaly as well and launches an investigation using the SLS Block 2 spacecraft.
The swarm that previously attacked Harper’s mission makes a reappearance, resulting in the deaths of all three crew members. This occurs after they release a probe into a kilometers-deep artificial hole on the Moon. Due to the Moon’s orbit deteriorating, it moves closer to Earth, leading to catastrophic events like tsunamis, gravitational abnormalities, and atmospheric dissipation. Fowler, who is now the deputy director of NASA, discovers that Apollo 11 encountered anomalies on the Moon. Additionally, during this mission there was a two-minute radio blackout to conceal unexplainable data that showed the Moon resonating intensely from the impact of Apollo 11’s discarded fuel tank. A military program known as ZX7 attempted to eradicate the swarm using an EMP, but this plan was ultimately abandoned due to budget constraints.
