Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Moonrise Kingdom (2012) is an American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Wes Anderson and co-written with Roman Coppola. Set on the New England island of New Penzance, 12-year-olds Sam Shakusky and Suzy Bishop cross paths at Camp Ivanhoe, a Khaki Scout summer camp run by Scout Master Randy Ward. While Sam is an orphan, Suzy lives with her parents Walt and Laura, both lawyers, and her younger brothers in their home named Summer’s End. Despite their similar introverted nature and intelligence beyond their years, they first meet during a church performance of Noye’s Fludde in the summer of 1964 and become corresponding pen pals. As their connection deepens, they make a secret pact to reunite and flee together. In September 1965, they put their plan into action.
As Sam breaks free from Camp Ivanhoe and Suzy flees Summer’s End, the two embark on a journey through the wilderness with the goal of reaching a specific destination. Meanwhile, as Scout Master Ward learns of Sam’s departure through his resignation letter, he instructs the Khaki Scouts to use their skills to form a search party and locate him. Island Police Captain Duffy Sharp and Ward also reach out to Sam’s guardians, the Billingsleys, only to discover that they are his foster parents and he is an orphan with a history of challenging behavior at home. Eventually, a group of Khaki Scouts confronts Sam and Suzy in their pursuit to capture them.
