Morbius (2022)

Morbius (2022), an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, is produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel. As the third installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), it tells the story of 10-year-old Michael Morbius and his surrogate brother Lucien (“Milo”), who bond over their shared blood illness and desire for normalcy while at a hospital in Greece. Their adoptive father and hospital director Nicholas arranges for Morbius to attend medical school in New York, while caring for Milo himself. 25 years later, Morbius declines a Nobel Prize publicly for his work involving artificial blood. His colleague Martine Bancroft discovers his secret experiment – capturing vampire bats from Costa Rica to splice their genes with his own in hopes of curing his condition. With funding from Milo, Morbius sets up a private mercenary vessel equipped with all necessary equipment. Despite the success of the cure, it also turns Morbius into a vampire when he attacks and kills the crew after they become fearful of him.

After his bloodlust fades and he regains his senses, a horrified Morbius destroys all CCTV footage of his experiment and contacts the authorities before jumping overboard. Back in New York, he discovers that he possesses superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and echolocation thanks to his vampire bat companions. In order to control his thirst for blood, he relies on artificial blood which eventually becomes insufficient. FBI agents Stroud and Rodriguez look into Morbius’ victims and piece together his involvement. Milo discovers that Morbius has been cured, but is livid when Morbius refuses to cure him as well. While visiting Bancroft in the hospital, Morbius comes across a dead nurse who has been drained of her blood. Assuming he is at fault, he tries to flee but is caught and arrested by Stroud. During his time in prison, Milo offers to use his wealth to secure Morbius’ release. However, upon learning that Milo stole his cure and killed the nurse, Morbius makes a daring escape to confront him. An unrepentant Milo admits to his murderous actions driven by bloodlust and urges Morbius to fully embrace his newfound powers.
