The American action comedy film, Mortdecai (2015), was directed by David Koepp and written by Eric Aronson. It is based on the novel series of the same name, specifically the first book Don’t Point that Thing at Me, written by Kyril Bonfiglioli. In Hong Kong, Lord Charlie Mortdecai, a self-proclaimed ‘art dealer’ and swindler, is approached by one of his victims, a gangster named Fang. With the help of his loyal manservant Jock, Mortdecai narrowly escapes harm. Back in London, he and his wife Johanna brainstorm ways to pay off their hefty tax debt. Meanwhile in Oxford, an elaborate art theft involving a painting by Francisco Goya leads to murder. Inspector Alistair Martland takes charge of the case and turns to Mortdecai for assistance. Being in love with Johanna since their college days, Martland puts pressure on Mortdecai to cooperate. The main suspect they’re after is Emil Strago. In exchange for his help, Mortdecai requests 10% of the insurance money.

Mortdecai conducts interviews with individuals involved in the art scene, including Spinoza, an art smuggler. As they engage in a heated argument, Strago suddenly appears and fires at them, tragically ending Spinoza’s life. Miraculously, Mortdecai manages to flee unscathed, though he unintentionally wounds Jock in the process. Meanwhile, Johanna meets with ‘The Duke’, who is acquainted with the thief responsible for stealing the painting that holds secrets to a stash of Nazi gold. Shortly after, Mortdecai becomes a target of Russian henchmen hired by Romanov due to their belief that he possesses the painting. In an attempt to coerce him into surrendering it, Romanov threatens Mortdecai with torture. However, he and Jock quickly find an escape route through a window. After surviving this dangerous encounter, Martland arranges for Mortdecai to travel to America where he will meet with potential buyer Milton Krampf for the Goya painting.
