Motherless Brooklyn (2019)
Motherless Brooklyn (2019) is a neo-noir crime flick from the United States, directed, produced and written by Edward Norton. Set in 1950s New York City, the story follows Lionel Essrog as he works at a detective agency with his colleagues: Gilbert Coney, Danny Fantl and Tony Vermonte. Frank Minna, their boss who saved them from an abusive orphanage when they were young, has given Lionel the nickname ‘Motherless Brooklyn’. Despite his Tourette Syndrome and OCD which can cause him to struggle in social situations, Lionel’s exceptional memory skills have made him a valuable detective. While working on a secret case, Frank enlists Lionel and Gilbert’s help to eavesdrop on one of his meetings. Through the phone line, Lionel hears Frank presenting documents that could potentially jeopardize a business deal for William Lieberman. During the meeting with Lieberman, his assistant Lou and a physically imposing henchman present, things quickly escalate when Frank attempts to negotiate a high price and it becomes clear that they want something more than just copies of these documents.
Lionel and Gilbert follow in their car, arriving just as Frank is shot. They rush him to the hospital, where he tragically passes away. In light of this loss, Julia appoints Tony as the new head of the office. Soon after, Lionel starts wearing Frank’s hat and coat, and a matchbook found in his pocket leads him to an African-American owned jazz bar in Harlem. It becomes clear to Lionel that Frank’s work involves Laura Rose, an employee at Gabby Horowitz’s organization dedicated to fighting urban renewal. Through this investigation, Lionel discovers that Moses Randolph – a powerful commissioner of multiple development authorities – has been met with opposition from Horowitz and other attendees at a recent public meeting. Using stolen credentials from a reporter, Lionel approaches Paul – one of the vocal protestors at the meeting – and reveals that Moses holds immense influence in the city government, surpassing even the mayor.
