Directed by Garry Marshall, the American romantic dramedy film Mother’s Day (2016) centers around a group of individuals in Atlanta as they navigate their relationships with their mothers. Among them is Sandy, a divorced mother of two sons named Mikey and Peter. Her ex-husband Henry has recently remarried to Tina, who is much younger than him. While still adjusting to this change, Sandy meets Bradley, a former Marine, at the supermarket. Bradley lost his wife Dana, a Marine Lieutenant, one year prior and is now raising their two daughters Vicky and Rachel on his own. Meanwhile, Kristin, who was adopted at birth, has her own daughter Katie and ponders whether she should marry the father of her child, Zack. Feeling like something is missing from her life, Kristin confides in her friend Jesse about searching for her birth mother. Interestingly enough, Jesse is also Sandy’s best friend.
Jesse is married to Russell, who is Indian, and they have a son named Tanner. Her sister Gabi is also married, to her wife Max, and they have a son named Charlie. When their parents Earl and Florence unexpectedly visit, the two sisters must confront their parents’ prejudices towards their partners. Meanwhile, while promoting her latest book in Atlanta, accomplished author and TV personality Miranda receives a surprise visit from her daughter Kristin, whom she was forced to give up for adoption when she was young. The mother-daughter reunion leads to Kristin proposing to her boyfriend Zach on live television, with Miranda’s blessing. However, during the celebration, Jesse and Gabi’s parents show up unannounced at their camper-van and force Russell to reconcile with Jesse via Skype with the help of his mother.
