Mr. Jealousy (1997)
Mr. Jealousy (1997), an American romantic comedy written and directed by Noah Baumbach, follows aspiring writer Lester Grimm’s relationship with Ramona Ray. Introduced by mutual friends Vince and Lucretia, the couple immediately hit it off. However, Ramona reveals that her ex-boyfriend is famous writer Dashiell Frank, causing Lester to feel envious. Spotting Dashiell on the street one day, Lester follows him to a group therapy session. Impersonating his friend Vince, Lester joins the group and after several sessions with Dr. Poke, overhears Dashiell confessing about his infidelity. Unable to hold back, Lester blurts out some criticism that stuns everyone.
After a few additional sessions, Lester makes the decision to leave the therapy group. Vince had previously urged him not to do so, as he had encouraged Lester to seek personal advice by discussing their interactions. After some persuasion, Lester agrees to stay for two more sessions, during which he continues to engage in tense exchanges with Dashiell. In one particular session, Dashiell mentions that one of his book characters was based on a real person, potentially alluding to Ramona. Despite initially planning to end his time with the group after these two sessions, Lester ultimately chooses to continue attending. After one session, Dashiell invites him out for a drink and they share scotch while Dashiell expresses his appreciation for their heated discussions in therapy, noting how they are both unafraid to speak their minds.
