Mr. Mom (1983)
Stan Dragoti directed Mr. Mom (1983), an American comedy film. Jack Butler resides in a Detroit suburb with his wife Caroline and their three children: Alex, Kenny, and Megan. However, when the early-1980s recession hits, Jack and his friends Larry and Stan lose their engineering jobs at Ford Motor Company. As a result, Caroline decides to use her previous experience in advertising and college education to enter the workforce once more, leaving Jack to navigate the unfamiliar territory of being a stay-at-home dad. He quickly learns that taking care of the kids and maintaining the house is not an easy task, but he gains support from other neighborhood housewives as he tries to balance these new responsibilities. Despite feeling slightly distracted by the flirtatious Joan (a friend of Caroline’s), Jack eventually adapts to his new role.
However, as Caroline’s career takes off as a rapidly advancing ad executive, Jack begins to feel constrained by suburban domestic life and somewhat threatened by her success. As Caroline navigates the workforce, she faces various obstacles: her innate nurturing and domestic skills put her high-level job at risk, and her boss Ron Richardson is determined to pursue a personal relationship with her. While presenting to a demanding client, Caroline’s experience as a thrifty housewife proves indispensable. The client’s president requests her expertise in shooting a commercial in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Jack receives an invitation from his previous employer to interview for his old position, but his former colleague Jinx has damaged his reputation. Jack confronts them about unethical practices before walking out in anger.
