After quashing an uprising led by his half-brother Don John, Don Pedro of Aragon and his comrades pay a visit to their friend Leonato in Messina. Accompanying Don Pedro is Benedick, a quick-witted man who has a history with Leonato’s clever niece, Beatrice. Claudio, a young count and friend of Benedick’s, also joins them. Despite his previous rebellion, Don John seems to have reconciled with his brother. Claudio has been enamored with Hero, Leonato’s daughter, since before he left for war and upon his return he finds her just as beautiful as ever. Hearing about Claudio’s feelings, Don Pedro takes it upon himself to arrange their marriage at a party. Don John tries to sabotage the match but fails – the marriage goes on as planned.
In order to pass the time until the wedding, Don Pedro decides to orchestrate a similar scheme for Beatrice and Benedick, who appear to harbor animosity towards each other. Along with Leonato and Claudio, they stage a conversation filled with false declarations of Beatrice’s love for Benedick, knowing that he is secretly listening nearby. Hero, Ursula, and Margaret also join in on this prank by tricking Beatrice in the same manner. All parties involved are convinced by the fabricated information about one another. Amidst this lighthearted plotting, Don John has been actively trying to prevent Claudio and Hero’s marriage. On the eve of the wedding, Don John’s servant Borachio arranges a steamy rendezvous with Margaret at Hero’s window in an attempt to discredit her.
