Mulan: Rise of a Warrior (2009) is an action-packed Chinese war film featuring Zhao Wei in the lead role. The movie follows the story of Hua Hu, a retired soldier who is determined to serve his country during the constant threat from the Rouran tribes in 450 A.D. However, due to the nationwide draft, his daughter Hua Mulan is unable to fulfill her desire to enlist as she is a woman. Fueled by her intelligence and impressive martial arts skills, Mulan takes matters into her own hands by disguising herself as a man and sneaking out of her home with the family horse. Luckily, her friend Fei Xiaohu ‘Tiger’ recognizes her true identity and promises to keep it a secret. As she enlists with the Wei army under her father’s name, she befriends Wentai, the sub commander of the battalion, as well as other new recruits including ‘Scholar’, ‘Fatso’, and his younger brother.

During the rigorous military training, Mulan displays bravery and impressive combat skills while protecting others from the harassment of ‘Turtle’, the army commander’s nephew. One evening, while bathing in a secluded hot spring, Mulan is unexpectedly interrupted by Wentai. After a brief altercation, she manages to escape without revealing her true identity. However, Wentai becomes determined to uncover the mysterious woman among them. Troubles escalate when Turtle unknowingly drops a valuable jade pendant during training and Tiger spitefully kicks it into a nearby lake. Accused of theft, the battalion is subjected to a strip-search by the army commander. Despite desperately searching for the pendant in the lake, Tiger cannot find it and Mulan is forced to confess in fear of dishonoring her father’s name as a woman masquerading as a soldier.
