Multiplicity (1996)
Multiplicity (1996) is a sci-fi comedy featuring Michael Keaton and Andie MacDowell. The film is based on Chris Miller’s short story published in National Lampoon magazine in Spring 1993. It follows the story of Doug Kinney, a hard-working construction worker in Los Angeles who struggles to balance work and family life. While working on a new project, he meets Dr. Leeds, a scientist who has developed a technique for cloning humans. Sympathetic to Doug’s situation, Dr. Leeds offers to clone him so that his duplicate can handle work responsibilities while Doug spends time with his family. This leads to the creation of ‘Two’, also known as ‘Lance’, who possesses all of Doug’s memories but showcases an exaggerated version of his masculine traits. Despite Doug’s efforts to keep Two a secret, he starts to worry when he spots him out on a date while dining with his wife Laura at a restaurant.
Despite the complications of having a clone, Lance is extremely busy at work, so Doug has another made to help out at home. The new clone, who goes by the name ‘Rico’, is an embodiment of Doug’s feminine characteristics. He enjoys cooking and takes great care of the house, much to Lance’s dismay. In an attempt to further alleviate their workload, Lance and Rico decide to create a third clone named Lenny, who they end up calling ‘Four’. However, being a clone-of-a-clone may have affected Lenny’s intelligence and he represents a more immature version of Doug. This is evident in Lenny referring to Doug as ‘Steve’. Frustrated with the outcome of the clones, Doug declares that there will be no more cloning experiments.
