Munich (2005)
The epic historical drama film, Munich (2005), was produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and co-written by Tony Kushner and Eric Roth. It is based on Vengeance, a 1984 book by George Jonas that details Mossad assassinations in the aftermath of the Munich massacre. The events take place during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, where a terrorist attack by the Palestinian militant group Black September resulted in the deaths of 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team. To carry out this mission, Mossad agent Avner Kaufman, who is of German-Jewish descent, is selected by his handler Ephraim. In order to maintain plausible deniability for Israel, Kaufman resigns from Mossad and operates independently.
He is joined by four volunteers from around the world: South African driver Steve, Belgian explosives expert Robert, former Israeli soldier Carl (known as ‘the cleaner’), and German document forger Hans from Frankfurt. The team receives intel from a French source, Louis, whose family has ties to Communist rebels. In Rome, they eliminate Wael Zwaiter, a poet in hiding. Paris becomes the target as they set off a bomb in Mahmoud Hamshari’s residence. They also carry out a bombing at Hussein Abd Al Chir’s hotel room in Cyprus. Working alongside IDF commandos, they track down and take out three Palestinian militants—Muhammad Youssef al-Najjar, Kamal Adwan, and Kamal Nasser—in Beirut after infiltrating their heavily guarded compound.
