Murder in the First (1995)
Murder in the First (1995) is an American legal drama film directed by Marc Rocco and written by Dan Gordon. As a 17-year-old orphan, Henri Young is turned down for a job at a grocery store and resorts to stealing $5.00 to feed himself and his sister Rosetta. Despite their desperate circumstances, he is caught and arrested while Rosetta is sent to an orphanage. Since the store also housed a U.S. Post Office, his crime becomes a federal offense. Henri never reunites with Rosetta and receives a sentence at Leavenworth Penitentiary in Kansas. Years later, he is transferred to Alcatraz where prison warden Milton Glenn becomes his oppressor. Henri joins forces with fellow inmates Rufus McCain and Arthur Barker in an attempt to escape.
McCain’s betrayal led to the failure of the escape plan, resulting in Barker’s death at the hands of the guards. As punishment, Glenn had Young sent to ‘the hole’, Alcatraz’s unforgiving dungeons, while he and Warden James Humson held a press conference emphasizing the prison’s impenetrability. Henri also faced brutal torture, enduring blows from a club, falls down stairs, and strikes from a blackjack. He was even stripped naked and subjected to a straight razor on his ankle to hinder his movements. For three long years, except for a brief 30 minutes on Christmas Day in 1940, Henri remained confined in solitary. This took a toll on his mental well-being and upon his release back into general population, he suffered a psychotic breakdown in the cafeteria.
