Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) is a horror film directed by Robert Florey, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s classic short story of the same name. Set in Paris in 1845, the film follows the twisted actions of mad scientist Dr. Mirakle as he kidnaps young women and infuses them with ape blood in attempts to create a companion for his talking sideshow ape, Erik. Among those who become entangled in Mirakle’s disturbing plans are medical student and detective Pierre Dupin, his fiancée Camille L’Espanaye, and their friends Paul and Mignette who visit the sideshow and encounter Erik. However, Mirakle and his servant Janos have their sights set on Camille to be Erik’s mate. When Camille becomes wary of Mirakle’s intentions, Pierre attempts to intervene but is threatened by Erik.

As they try to leave, Mirakle orders Janos to follow them. The lifeless body of one of Mirakle’s victims, a sex worker, is discovered in the river and taken to the police station. Determined to investigate her death, Pierre attempts to access the victim’s blood but is denied by the morgue keeper. Undeterred, Pierre resorts to bribing the keeper and obtains a sample of the blood for examination. Startled by his findings, Pierre uncovers a foreign substance in not only this victim’s blood but also in other recent murder victims’. In the midst of his investigation, Mirakle coerces Camille into visiting Erik once again; when Camille refuses, Mirakle sends Erik to forcibly take her. As he is leaving his residence, Pierre hears Camille’s cries for help coming from her room that has been locked from within.
