My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) is an American romantic comedy directed by P. J. Hogan and written by Ronald Bass, who also served as producer. Just three weeks prior to her 28th birthday, New York City food critic Julianne ‘Jules’ Potter receives a call from Michael O’Neal, her lifelong friend and a sportswriter in Chicago. The two had made a pact years ago that they would marry each other if they were both single at age 28. However, Michael informs Jules that he is getting married in four days to a younger college student named Kimmy Wallace, whose father happens to own the Chicago White Sox. Upon realizing her love for him, Jules takes it upon herself to stop the wedding. She arrives in Chicago and reconnects with Michael while also meeting Kimmy, who asks Jules to be her maid of honor. Jules devises a plan to break up the couple but ends up embarrassing Kimmy instead during a karaoke night.
Jules uses Kimmy to persuade her father to offer Michael a job, ultimately causing anger for Michael. Despite her efforts, this plan fails. Unable to find another solution, she turns to her friend George Downes for assistance. On his advice, Jules decides to express her love for Michael but ends up lying and saying she is engaged to George in hopes of making him jealous. During a lunch with the wedding party, George plays along with the charade but embarrasses Jules by singing ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ with everyone in the restaurant joining in. After returning home, Jules tells Michael that her ‘relationship’ with George is over. This admission sparks jealousy in Michael and gives Jules the opportunity to confess her true feelings. However, she lets the moment slip away. As they share a dance together, Michael sings their special song ‘The Way You Look Tonight’.
