Based on the graphic novel by John ‘Derf’ Backderf, My Friend Dahmer (2017) is a biographical psychological drama film directed by Marc Meyers. It follows the story of American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who was friends with Backderf in high school in the 1970s. Set in Bath, Ohio, the film portrays young Jeffrey as a freshman living with his parents and younger brother Dave. Obsessed with a male jogger he sees daily from his school bus, Jeffrey spends his spare time dissolving dead animals to study their skeletal structures using chemicals from his father, who is a chemist.
In 1978, Lionel destroys Jeffrey’s bone collection and demands that he make friends at school. During this time, Jeffrey mimics the speech and mannerisms of his mother’s interior designer who has cerebral palsy. As a result, he catches the eye of aspiring artist John ‘Derf’ Backderf and his peers. Derf becomes inspired to capture Jeffrey in different scenarios through drawings which eventually appear in his graphic novel My Friend Dahmer. The group creates the ‘Dahmer Fan Club’ and utilizes Jeffrey for various pranks (referred to as ‘Doing a Dahmer’), including sneaking him into every yearbook photo and tricking their way into meeting Vice President Walter Mondale during a school trip to Washington, D.C.
