My Own Private Idaho (1991)
My Own Private Idaho (1991) is an American indie adventure drama flick written and directed by Gus Van Sant, loosely based on the works of Shakespeare. It follows the lives of young hustlers Mike Waters and Scott Favor as they navigate the Pacific Northwest, often spending time with their fellow hustlers in an abandoned building in Portland.Their mentor is Bob Pigeon, an overweight homeless man who himself identifies as gay. Among this group, Mike and Scott share a close bond as best friends. While Mike openly embraces his homosexuality, Scott views his encounters with male clients purely as a business transaction. In their friendship, Scott takes on a protective role towards Mike, who suffers from stress-induced narcolepsy that causes him to pass out at inconvenient times and places. Over time, Mike confesses to Scott that his feelings for him go beyond just platonic love.
Shortly after their arrival in Portland, Mike and Scott are reunited with Bob Pigeon, a respected figure to a group of street kids and hustlers who call an abandoned apartment building their home. Bob is middle-aged and has taken on the role of mentor to these young outcasts. In a moment of vulnerability, Scott, who happens to be the son of the Mayor of Portland, confides in Bob that he will inherit his father’s fortune when he turns 21 and plans to retire from his life on the streets. Meanwhile, Mike has been longing to find his mother and enlists Scott’s help on a journey to Idaho where his older brother Richard resides. On the way there, Mike opens up to Scott about his feelings for him, but Scott kindly reminds him that he only sleeps with men for financial gain. Upon reaching Richard’s place, they hear an intriguing story about a man claiming to be Mike’s father.
