Mystic Pizza (1988)
Mystic Pizza (1988), an American romantic comedy-drama directed by Donald Petrie in his directorial debut, tells the story of three young Portuguese-American women working at a pizza parlor owned by Leona and her husband Vic in Mystic, Connecticut. Sisters Kat and Daisy Araújo, along with their friend Josephina ‘JoJo’ Barboza, are waitresses at this establishment. During JoJo’s wedding to Bill, she faints due to cold feet about settling down. Although she still wants to continue their physical relationship until she is ready for marriage, Bill ultimately ends things as he desires a commitment. Meanwhile, the sisters could not be more different. Kat, an aspiring astronomer who also works at the local planetarium and pizza parlor, has been accepted into Yale University on a partial scholarship. On the other hand, Daisy’s main goal is to have as much fun as possible.
Despite her satisfaction with Kat, their mother often expresses doubts about Daisy’s life decisions and fears for her uncertain future. Those concerns are only heightened when Daisy meets Charles, a wealthy young man she encounters at a bar. Despite their immediate attraction and the start of a relationship, her mother is less than pleased. This disapproval only grows stronger when Charles’s family makes thoughtless comments about Daisy’s Portuguese heritage at a family dinner and he reacts poorly. Hoping to defy his parents, Daisy breaks things off with him and accuses him of using her. Meanwhile, Kat has been hired by Tim, an architect and Yale graduate (Class of ’79), to babysit his young daughter Phoebe while his wife is away on business in England. As time passes, Kat becomes infatuated with Tim and believes they share a true love connection – ultimately leading to them sleeping together.
