Napoleon (2023), an epic historical drama film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa, explores the story of Napoleon Bonaparte, chronicling his ascent to power and his relationship with his wife, Joséphine Bonaparte. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the film begins with young army officer Napoleon witnessing the execution of Marie Antoinette by guillotine in 1793. Later that year, Revolutionary leader Paul Barras entrusts Napoleon with managing the Siege of Toulon, where he successfully repels British ships using artillery. Following the fall of Maximilien Robespierre and the end of the Reign of Terror, Napoleon joins other leaders in attempting to restore stability in France. Utilizing his expertise in artillery once again, Napoleon quells a royalist insurrection on 13 Vendémiaire in 1795.

Alongside these events, Napoleon also pursues aristocratic widow Joséphine de Beauharnais and eventually marries her. Despite their passionate physical relationship, they do not have any children together. After his victory at the Battle of the Pyramids in 1798, he quickly rushes back to Egypt upon hearing that Joséphine has taken a younger lover, Hippolyte Charles. However, his decision to leave his troops is heavily criticized by the Directory. In response, he condemns their inadequate leadership of France and leads a successful coup with the help of Talleyrand, Fouché, Sieyès, and Ducos. This results in his rise to power as First Consul. In 1804, he boldly has himself crowned Emperor of the French by the pope, personally placing the crown on his own head. Despite suggestions from Foreign Minister Talleyrand for an alliance with Austria, they reject the proposal.
