Scott Waugh directed and co-edited Need for Speed (2014), an action crime film written by George and John Gatins. Based on Electronic Arts’ racing video game franchise of the same name, the story follows Tobey Marshall, a former race car driver who runs his late father’s garage in Mount Kisco, New York. Struggling financially, Tobey and his friends participate in street races at night. After one race, Dino Brewster, Tobey’s old rival, asks them to complete a rare Ford Shelby Mustang that belonged to Carroll Shelby in exchange for a 25% cut of the sale. The finished car is featured at a party in New York City where Tobey meets Julia Maddon, an English car broker representing Bill Ingram who is interested in buying the Mustang if they can prove it can reach speeds over 230 mph.

Despite Tobey’s objections, Dino is determined to prove the power of the Mustang and takes it to a local race track, reaching an impressive speed of 234 mph. This success convinces Ingram to purchase the car for a whopping $2.7 million. Feeling enraged by Tobey’s disregard for his objections, Dino decides to challenge him and their friend Pete to a race. When Pete confidently asserts that everyone knows Tobey is the superior driver, Dino offers a high stakes bet – if Tobey wins, he will relinquish his entire share of the sale, but if he loses, he must give up his share. The challenge includes Dino’s uncle’s three Koenigsegg Agera R cars that were brought into the country illegally from Europe. As they near the finish line, it becomes clear that Tobey is winning, causing Dino to intentionally collide with Pete’s car in a final desperate attempt to claim victory.
