Neighbors (1981)
Neighbors (1981) is a film adaptation of Thomas Berger’s novel, featuring the story of Earl Keese, a mild-mannered middle-class suburbanite. His uneventful routine is disrupted when a young couple, Vic and Ramona Zeck, become his new neighbors. As soon as they move in, they begin imposing on the Keese household. Earl becomes increasingly frustrated with Vic’s loud and enthusiastic personality, while Ramona attempts to seduce him multiple times. Despite Earl’s efforts, he cannot prove that the Zecks are intentionally causing trouble. To make matters worse, his wife Enid and daughter Elaine are not much help either. The tension between Earl and the Zecks reaches its peak that same night, resulting in an all-out suburban battle.
Earl pulls a prank on Vic by hiding his truck, but it ends up getting stuck in a swamp pond near Earl’s house. In retaliation, Vic vandalizes Earl’s car. When Earl calls for help to move the truck out of the swamp, Vic locks him in his basement. The next day, after the truck is towed out, Vic finds a toy airplane inside and accidentally sets fire to his own house while playing with it. As an apology, Earl offers Vic his place to stay, but later becomes suspicious that Vic deliberately set fire to collect insurance money. However, things take an unexpected turn when both Vic and Ramona Zeck reveal they have no insurance or money and their marriage is not legally binding. Furthermore, they do not even own the house.
