Directed by Irvin Kershner, the spy film Never Say Never Again (1983) is adapted from Ian Fleming’s 1961 James Bond novel Thunderball, with inspiration from Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Fleming. Following a failed training exercise, MI6 agent James Bond is ordered by his superior M to undergo physical rehabilitation at a health clinic outside London. While there, he witnesses nurse Fatima Blush inflicting sadomasochistic violence on a patient in a nearby room. The man’s face is concealed with bandages and he undergoes an eye scan after the beating. Blush spots Bond and sends assassin Lippe to eliminate him in the clinic gym. A destructive fight between the two results in damage to the clinic’s furniture and equipment, for which M holds Bond accountable and suspends him from active duty.

Blush, an operative for SPECTRE, answers to the leader of the criminal organization, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Her current assignment involves overseeing United States Air Force pilot Jack Petachi, who is struggling with a heroin addiction. In order to carry out their plan, Petachi underwent surgery to alter his right eye’s retinal pattern to perfectly match that of the US President. Using this deception, Petachi gains access to RAF Station Swadley in England, an American military base. Once inside, he replaces the dummy warheads on two AGM-86B cruise missiles with functioning W80 nuclear warheads. SPECTRE then seizes these live warheads with the intention of extorting billions of dollars from NATO governments. Blush eliminates Petachi by causing a car accident and explosion, conveniently covering up SPECTRE’s tracks.
